Your roof has played host to seasonal light displays and the accumulated debris from winter storms. It’s experienced the pounding rain and the blossoms that fall in the spring time. You want it to last for many years to come. That’s why you need to take care of your roof and your roof warranty. Are there any activities that could void your roof warranty?
First of all, you want to make sure that the roof installer you choose is a roofing expert. While it’s tempting to cut corners and choose an installer who’s less expensive, make sure that you check references before you choose the cheaper quote. Installation mistakes can void the warranty on your roofing materials.
Making an Addition
You’re so excited to have all of this roof space. It’s like a whole other room up there where you can install your satellite dish, a new skylight, and perhaps even a rooftop garden. However, any time you make holes in your roof or move materials around, you run the risk of compromising its integrity. Before you make plans to add to your roof, check with the roofing company and the manufacturer to make sure that your plans are good ones that won’t void your warranty.
Keeping It Clean
You want your home to look beautiful, so you give your siding and your roof a thorough wash every year. However, roofing materials aren’t necessarily designed to withstand this pressure in odd places, and pressure washing can damage your roof. Not only that, it can also void your warranty.
Before you install a new roof or make a repair to an existing roof, make sure that what’s underneath supports your new roofing. For instance, if you’re adding another layer of roofing to complete a repair to your roof, this could void the warranty of the materials that are underneath. Always make sure that you’re installing or repairing a roof in the way the manufacturer recommends.
The ventilation in your attic matters as well. When you first install a roof, make sure that you have adequate inflow and outflow of air in your attic. An attic that’s too hot or too damp provides a poor substrate for your new roof.
Protecting Your Roof
Every roof warranty is different, so make sure you check your warranty before you pursue a project. One activity that won’t void your warranty is the increased roof protection that gutter guards provide. For instance, you can ensure that water flows easily off your roof when you install gutters with gutter covers. This prevents your gutters from getting backed up and, in the winter months, it can prevent ice from forming in your gutters and causing ice damage on your roof.
