Bringing Fall Colors Home

Seamless gutters
Dahlias have large, lush blooms in the fall garden.

Fall is a time when the garden is descending into rest: or is it? Believe it or not, your garden can shine bright in the fall, and when it does, it will truly beautify your home. How can you bring the beauty of fall to your garden space?

Add Seasonal Wreathes, Planters, and Decor

Adding annuals to your garden is a simple way to bring the joy of fall into your garden. Annual plants are easy to move around or change as the season progresses. You can add them to garden beds to increase interest as summer plants wane, or you can place them in pots that adorn your deck. Popular fall annuals include:

  • Mums: According to HGTV, fall mums are “virtually immune to pest and disease problems, extremely carefree and available in lots of colors.”
  • Asters look similar to mums, but they don’t mind if the fall is dry or if you place the pot in a dry location.
  • Pansies: Put a touch of spring into your fall garden with a pot of pansies.
  • Marigolds: Use these as a border around larger fall plants

Transition Your Garden Into Fall

When you’re planning your garden, be sure to turn the page on summer and begin to plan for fall as well. You can make a succession plan for your garden to ensure that it continues to look beautiful throughout the seasons. Not all fall flowers are orange, red, or yellow. You can have any shade you’d like in these fall perennials:

  • Anemone: Tall flowers in white, rose, and lilac colors
  • Asters form clumps of fall flowers in purple, blue, pink, and white
  • Boltonia: Flowers are similar to daisies
  • Chrysanthemums come in a wide variety of different colors
  • Dahlias have gloriously lush flowers, and Today’s Homeowner points out that “tubers can be dug up and overwintered in colder climates” if you want to ensure that they’ll stick around.

Spruce Up Your Outdoor Space

Early fall is still a good time for barbeques and enjoying the patio, but as the days get cool and wet, you might not think of using your patio as often. Place a patio awning, canopy, or trellis over your outdoor space. Add plants that grow up the structure, or place planters on the outside of the space to define it. If you have a fence close to your patio, grow vines with fall colors on the fence.

As you move into the fall, make sure that your home is looking its best to provide a backdrop for your fall garden. Wash the siding, repair cracks in the pavement, rake leaves into piles and use them for mulch, and clean out seamless gutters or add gutter covers to reduce the need to clean your fall leaves from the gutter.

Move up in the world: enjoy vines in your garden this fall.

Move Up in the Gardening World

Are you thinking about fall colors? If you are, you probably think about the leaves on the ground rather than taller plants in the garden. Vines can add a lot of beauty to your fall garden, and they work well on an arbor or trellis. Check before placing them on a fence or porch railing to make sure that they won’t damage the structure. Here are a few vines to consider:

  • Sweet autumn clematis brings tall, late-blooming flowers followed by silvery seed heads in the fall.
  • Purple leaf grape has brilliant leaves and dark clusters of ornamental grapes.
  • Climbing hydrangea’s leaves turn yellow with the frost, and it has delicate, lacy flowers.
  • Trumpet honeysuckle not only has abundant bright yellow blossoms, it also attracts hummingbirds.

Enjoy Tall Grasses

There’s nothing like the whisper of grasses to bring open fields to mind in the fall. Grasses can bring a backdrop of brown or red to your fall garden. Consider the following grasses for inclusion in your garden as a centerpiece of a fall bed:

  • Blue oat grass is evergreen, so it keeps its blue-green color throughout the fall and winter.
  • Feather reed grass has a classic wheat-like look and is one of the first grasses to go to seed in the summer.
  • Flame grass is bright red at the top, bringing fall color to your garden.
  • Pheasant’s tail grass has copper color in it as the fall arrives.

I have had Gutter Helmets for 20 years. In all that time I've never had a problem until recently a bird's nest found its way into one of my gutters. The installer who came to replace the product was the same installer from 20 years earlier. Now that's impressive. Everyone at Gutter Helmet inclusive of the office staff were professional and a pleasure to work with.

Gutter Helmet by Harry Helmet just replaced our roof and we could not be more satisfied. The crew showed up early, worked all day and stayed late, were professional and caring regarding the project and the surrounding impact it had on our property and home. They completed the roof quickly and it looks simply amazing!

VERY happy with our entire experience adding Gutter Helmet by Harry Helmet to our house. Installing this was a great value for us. The gutters are working perfectly in heavy downpours and with year-long leaves and debris coming down from our river birches. Terrific customer service and a first class product.

We needed our roof repaired due to wind damage. After several quotes, Gutter Helmet was the only company that went into our attic to look and see if more damage had occurred. If it wasn't for them taking the extra time to look at everything, we would have had rotting wood under our new roof. They were very professional and gave a fair quote.
