Before and After: 5 Ways To Give Your Home a Facelift

Make sure that hardscaping elements match the look of your home.

Is your house looking saggy and sad? If so, it might need a facelift. However, a home facelift involves more than a bit of paint. By changing the exterior of your home for the better, you can not only improve the look and the resale value of your home – you can also make it easier for your home to look beautiful in the future.

1. Add Hardscaping Elements to Your Garden

According to HGTV, “63 percent of homebuyers will drop by after viewing a home they like online.” Whether your home is up for sale or you want to welcome visitors, adding hardscaping elements to your garden can reduce your maintenance and increase curb appeal.

Do you have trouble mowing the lawn frequently? Is your lawn gathering moss rather than growing lush green grass? If you have a troublesome lawn or chronically overgrown garden beds, reducing the maintenance you need to do will not only save you time, it will also give your home a permanent facelift. If you’re struggling with garden maintenance and looking at a hardscaping solution, you can:

  • Add a deck or patio if you want a simple play or entertainment space
  • Create easy access garden boxes or beds that focus on a few species of low-maintenance plants
  • Edge existing paths with strong, permanent structures such as rocks
  • Add pathways made out of rock or brick
  • Create terraces to highlight different types of plants and add visual interest without a lot of maintenance
  • Put in alternative groundcovers, such as small rocks

2. Build an Indoor-Outdoor Living Space

If you love entertaining or you want to be able to easily see the children as they play in the garden, adding a patio, deck, or even a sunroom can give your home a friendly facelift. How can you make this space as attractive as possible?

  • Make sure the space is safe by adding railings
  • Create a focal point for the space, such as a fire pit, table, or art piece
  • Edge your space with planter boxes or other decorative items
  • Add a large wall as a backdrop to your deck
  • Place a patio awning or roof over the deck for enjoyment during all seasons
  • Build a trellis to add greenery without adding larger plants

3. Create Visual Cohesion

As you redecorate your outdoor space, choose a theme or an overall feeling to your home. This doesn’t mean that you need to decorate everything in plaid or have floral patterns all over your country garden, unless you want to, of course. It just means that your decorating style outdoors echoes the nature of your home and has a cohesive color and style. For example, you could:

  • Choose paint for the trim and door that complement each other or are the same
  • Choose porch furniture that contrasts with the color of your home
  • Enhance the symmetry of your home. According to Better Homes and Gardens, “symmetrical compositions of light fixtures and front-door accents create welcoming entryways and boost curb appeal.”
  • Add plants that match the style of your home, such as long grasses for a home with clean, modern lines
  • Make sure that any of your hardscaping elements feel similar to the overall nature of your home – for instance, a country cottage would work well with country gardens that have a softer edge and curves.
  • Be aware of the transition areas between the garden and the home. Is the transition smooth, or do the two areas feel like two distinctly different spaces?

4. Update or Enhance the Features of Your Home

If your house is looking a little tired, chances are you need to do some work on the key features or structures of your home. These include siding and roofing, but they also include smaller but critical systems such as your gutters. Keep these features looking well-maintained, and this will add value to your home and give future buyers peace of mind as well.

  • Wash your siding
  • Repair damaged siding
  • Fix windows
  • Clean gutters to prevent roof and siding damage
  • Remove debris from gutters
  • Add gutter covers to keep your home looking tidy and reduce maintenance
  • Fix roofing tiles
  • Examine areas where the roofing meets other structures, such as chimneys

5. Tidy Up Outdoors

Sometimes, the gardens can take away from the house. Make sure that they’re adding to it instead.

  • Remove large shrubs and trees that obscure the house or are prone to damaging it
  • Prune shrubs and trees for safety and style, so that they look well-managed
  • Add storage areas where you can tuck away tools and other items used outside, such as the garden hose
  • Convert garden plants to evergreens if you have a lot of trouble getting to your leaves in the fall
  • Install low-maintenance structures such as gutter covers to give your home and garden a tidy look

I have had Gutter Helmets for 20 years. In all that time I've never had a problem until recently a bird's nest found its way into one of my gutters. The installer who came to replace the product was the same installer from 20 years earlier. Now that's impressive. Everyone at Gutter Helmet inclusive of the office staff were professional and a pleasure to work with.

Gutter Helmet by Harry Helmet just replaced our roof and we could not be more satisfied. The crew showed up early, worked all day and stayed late, were professional and caring regarding the project and the surrounding impact it had on our property and home. They completed the roof quickly and it looks simply amazing!

VERY happy with our entire experience adding Gutter Helmet by Harry Helmet to our house. Installing this was a great value for us. The gutters are working perfectly in heavy downpours and with year-long leaves and debris coming down from our river birches. Terrific customer service and a first class product.

We needed our roof repaired due to wind damage. After several quotes, Gutter Helmet was the only company that went into our attic to look and see if more damage had occurred. If it wasn't for them taking the extra time to look at everything, we would have had rotting wood under our new roof. They were very professional and gave a fair quote.
